Reading and sharing books should be a fun experience and instill the love of reading in the autistic child. The challenge is making a child focus while reading because a child with ASD is often sensitive to sound, touch, smell, or light. On the other hand, some children are auditory learners, so they will like you to read. Some kids are strong visual learners, so books with more illustrations and less text let them use their imagination. The books shouldn't be text-heavy since children with ASD have difficulty reading. Books help them understand emotions better and can be highly inspiring. Reading is an essential skill that helps children develop communication skills, enhance listening skills, and build an emotional connection. Books have to make them relate with the characters and story to understand their place in the world. They need meaningful and engaging stories that children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) will love to read, even if it's challenging for some. However, finding the perfect book for autistic or neurodiverse children is not easy.

But as we see with newer titles like Benny Doesn’t Like to Be Hugged and My Rainbow, hopefully, more diverse books about autistic children are forthcoming.Books are a fantastic instrument for learning or revealing a piece of ourselves. While we do our best to actively promote diversity in books and publishing, this list features fewer authors and illustrators of color than we’d like. These books are all aimed at kids 10 years old and under, and for more books aimed at a variety of ages and in different genres, we also have a list of 50+ books about neurodiversity and another shorter list of picture books. I’ve noted when the book is written by an autistic author using #OwnVoices. Finally, there are sensory books for autistic children, which provide stimulating visual and tactile sensory experiences as they inform about animals, sounds, emotions, and anything else you can think of.

Then there are informational books about autism, many of which break down why kids on the spectrum react certain ways. There are books for and about autistic kids, many of them about creating and celebrating healthy relationships.

This list of books for autistic children is split into different categories. People on the autism spectrum might communicate, behave, and learn in ways that are different than others, and their specific behaviours can vary in form. Autism is still often treated as a taboo topic, so books about autistic children should be essential reading for everyone.
